Citizens for a Quiet Community
Residents lived in this area many years before the Island Lake Shooting Range opened. Citizens for a Quiet Community was organized to reduce the excessively loud gunshot noise from the range. Information is also included regarding accumulation of lead deposits in the soil and groundwater.

Alternate shooting ranges in Michigan, Ohio,
and Indiana
There are at least 288 shooting ranges combined
in Michigan (120), Ohio (104), and Indiana (64); the majority of which
are public. Half of the ranges are located in Southern Lower Michigan,
Northern Ohio, and Northern Indiana easily within reach of the shooters
that use the Island Lake Shooting Range. Many of the ranges include
all the same types of shooting activities as Island Lake and
some also include archery and indoor ranges. Below are links to alphabetical lists
of the ranges:
Other shooting ranges in the Metropolitan Detroit area
This map of greater metropolitan Detroit shows 29 shooting ranges. The large green dot (left center) is the location of the Island Lake Shooting Range. The orange dots show the locations of other shooting ranges, both public and private.
This chart illustrates the type of noise
intrusion at homes in the area. It was recorded in October 2004 more
than a mile north of the Island Lake Shooting Range.

The Shooting Range is located in the Island Lake Recreation Area directly adjacent to Kensington Metropark. Approximately 600 homes are also located within two miles of the shooting range (the area most affected by gunshot noise). These parks and nearly all of the homes were here long before the shooting range was built.
Our efforts began in early 2003 with a group of residents concerned about the ever-increasing rifle and shotgun noise from the Island Lake Shooting Range. The noise and activity had been growing since the opening of the rifle and pistol ranges. This was followed by the addition and expansion of the trap and skeet ranges. The Sporting Clays course was then added around the perimeter of the shooting range near the top of the berm that was intended to reduce the gunshot noise. In 2005 the number of stations in the Sporting Clays course was increased from 15 to 25.
